About FuelFlow

The Developer

Hi! I’m a developer with a passion for ultramarathon running. FuelFlow was born from my own struggles managing nutrition during long-distance events. I found existing apps too complex for on-the-move logging, so I built something better — first on iPhone and Apple Watch, then Android, then the web.

My experience running 100-milers taught me that good nutrition tracking needs to be fast, simple, and accessible at a glance—especially when you’re tired and moving. Every feature in FuelFlow reflects lessons learned on the trails, from the quick-tap logging system to the real-time hourly progress tracking.

While FuelFlow was born from ultrarunning, the nutrition challenges are universal across endurance sports. Whether you’re tackling your first 50K, cycling a century ride, racing a triathlon, or pushing through any endurance challenge, proper fueling can make or break your performance. FuelFlow helps you nail your nutrition strategy across all your endurance pursuits so you can focus on what matters: moving forward.

The Story Behind FuelFlow

The Problem

During my first 100-miler, I tried tracking nutrition in my head. By mile 40, I was too exhausted to deal with thinking and remembering ‘did I eat that?’. I ended up under-fueling and bonked hard at mile 70.

The Solution

I knew I needed something that worked with an Apple Watch—something I could operate with one tap, even when my brain was foggy and my hands were clumsy. FuelFlow was designed to be:

  • Fast: Log food in under 2 seconds
  • Simple: No complex menus or data entry mid-activity
  • Reliable: Works offline, syncs when you have signal
  • Informative: Real-time feedback on whether you’re hitting your targets

The Mission

Help endurance athletes dial in their nutrition strategy so they can focus on their performance, not on complicated tracking systems. Whether you’re training for your first ultra, preparing for an Ironman, or chasing a podium finish in any endurance sport, proper fueling shouldn’t be complicated.

FuelFlow now supports multiple activity types:

  • Running - From 5Ks to 200-milers
  • Cycling - Road, gravel, bike packing, and more
  • Triathlon - Seamless tracking through all three disciplines
  • Multisport - Adventure races and custom combinations

Weather Data & Attribution

FuelFlow uses two sources of weather information to plan your fueling, because heat and humidity drive how much you sweat — and therefore how much sodium and fluid you need.

Forecast — for races within about a week, conditions come from Tomorrow.io.

Climate estimates — a race further out than that has no forecast yet. Rather than assume mild conditions, FuelFlow estimates what a place is typically like on that date and at that hour, using six years of ERA5 reanalysis data. These are rough historical averages, not predictions, and they are replaced by a real forecast as race day approaches.

Generated using Copernicus Climate Change Service information (ERA5), 2020–2025. Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus information or data it contains.
